Crossing the Han river

du han jiang
Away from home, I was longing for news
Winter after winter, spring after spring.
Now, nearing my village, meeting people,
I dare not ask a single question.

Original Poem:

「渡汉江」
岭外音书断,经冬复历春。
近乡情更怯,不敢问来人。

李频

Interpretation:

This poem is about the feelings of people who have been away for a long time when they are about to return home.

The feelings conveyed by the author are superimposed on the isolation in time and space, which strengthens the loneliness and bitterness of living in a barbaric place for a long time after his relegation and his longing for his family. The author is trapped in the relegated place, no support, lonely and bitter mood is also clear. Originally, he had been living in the relegated place for many years, but now that he has finally returned, he should be eager to know the situation of his relatives in his hometown. The author relegated to Lingnan for many years, and the sound and letters are all cut off, he was thinking after so many years, the hometown of the relatives are still alive, whether because of his relegation and implicated.

The reason why this poem has been passed down through the ages is that it vividly expresses the common inner feelings of people who have lived in other countries for a long time when they return home.
